Our Projects

  • Asylum voices

This project focuses on recording short digital stories of refugees and asylum seekers from black and ethnic minority communities in Swansea area, both male and female (12 to 16 years and above). The participants are guided by 2 trained community artists to make short, often powerful, personal films on a computer.

These films/stories can be first or second person stories told about individual experiences whether sad or happy, of life in the UK, integrating in their new communities, as well as past experiences from their home countries. These stories can be used to raise public awareness of the issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers and influence the policymaking and training programmes of local agencies and services.

A lot of positive outcomes have come out of the recorded films and more influencing stories are being recorded as new people come into the community. The weekly drop-ins hold on Wednesdays 12 pm to 2pm as well as meetings on appointment based for the same day at the ACC with transport costs and childcare covered.

  • I CAN

The I Can project is a children and young people's mentoring project with role model volunteers from the community.
The project has more then 18 young people who attend the weekly youth forum where pertinent issues that affect the young people are discussed.

The weekly meeting also provides an avenue for the young people to relax and interact with one another. As many of the young people live in deprived areas and come from disadvantaged communities, this weekly interaction helps to reduce isolation and social exclusion. The drop centre is furnished with a Nintendo Wii, punching bag and laptops for homework research.

The Drop-in also hosts speaker-sessions with the young people, featuring local and wider inspirational personalities coming in to give a talk with the aim of motivating the young people to achieve their full potential in life.

  • Women Seeking Sanctuary

This project works with women who are seeking sanctuary in the UK as well as Refugee women living in and around Swansea.
35 women are signed up to the project and approximately 20 of these women attend the weekly meetings at the ACC.
These women live in different parts of Swansea and most of them come from some of the most socially and economically deprived areas in Swansea.

The participants originally come from a wide variety of countries and cultures such as Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Kenya, Iraq, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Congo. This richness in diversity adds to the uniqueness of the group as it presents a great opportunity for the participants to learn about the cultures of different people through regular interaction and activities.

A lot of the women who have accessed this project have testified that they feel very comfortable coming to the ACC Drop-In Centre as it provides a culturally sensitive and comfortable environment for them to relax, learn and interact with people from different parts of the world. It is also made easier for them as coming to the Centre does not involve them incurring any personal costs as transport costs and reimbursed and childcare is provided on site.
